Newsday: Republicans File Federal Lawsuit Challenging New York’s Switch to Even-Year Local Elections

October 30, 2025 — Newsday

A raft of Republican officials, candidates, and committees filed a federal lawsuit in the Eastern District of New York seeking to block New York’s 2023 law moving county, town, and other local elections to even-numbered years. Plaintiffs—the New York State Republican Committee, the Nassau and Suffolk county GOP committees, other counties, and individual candidates—allege the Even Year Election Law violates the First Amendment by burdening core political speech and association, and violates federal voting rights protections by exacerbating racially polarized voting. The filing follows a 7–0 New York Court of Appeals ruling two weeks earlier upholding the statute against state-constitutional challenges.

“[The EYEL] imposes a direct and substantial burden on core political speech and association under the First Amendment” — Complaint, E.D.N.Y., via Newsday
