Bloomberg Law: NY GOP Takes Even-Year Election Law Challenge to Federal Court

Republicans filed a federal lawsuit in the Eastern District of New York challenging the Even Year Election Law, which moves county and town elections to even-year cycles; plaintiffs are the New York Republican State Committee, three GOP-leaning counties, and individual candidates, represented by Brewer, Attorneys & Counselors. The complaint alleges violations of the U.S. Constitution (including First Amendment burdens) and the Federal Voting Rights Act, and follows the Court of Appeals’ Oct. 16 decision upholding the statute against a state-law challenge; the case is N.Y. Republican State Comm. v. State of New York, No. 2:25-cv-06083 (E.D.N.Y.), complaint filed Oct. 30, 2025.
