New York Post: NY Republicans Make Another Bid to Stop Hochul, Dems From Moving Local Elections

October 31, 2025 — New York Post

The New York State Republican Committee, joined by GOP representatives and party committees from Nassau, Suffolk, and Orange Counties, filed a federal lawsuit Thursday in the Eastern District of New York seeking to block the 2023 Even-Year Election Law that moves most local elections outside New York City to even-numbered years. The complaint alleges First Amendment and Voting Rights Act violations, asserting local candidates’ speech will be burdened as races are consolidated with federal and statewide contests; the filing follows a unanimous Oct. 16 Court of Appeals decision upholding the statute.

“By coupling local elections to federal and statewide ballots, the [even year election law] systematically converts local races into low-information, partisan contests.” — New York Post

“The Even-Year Election Law is unconstitutional and undemocratic.” — William A. Brewer III, Brewer, Attorneys & Counselors
