Fingerlakes1: Lawsuit challenges New York’s Even Year Election Law

A sweeping federal lawsuit filed Oct. 30, 2025, in the Eastern District of New York challenges New York’s Even Year Election Law, alleging violations of the First Amendment and the Voting Rights Act. The complaint unites Republican committees, county governments, town officials, and local candidates from Nassau, Suffolk, and Orange counties, asserting that consolidating local races with presidential and statewide contests will drown out local speech, inflate campaign costs, increase ballot roll-off, and disproportionately impact communities of color. Plaintiffs ask the court to strike down the law or permit county and town opt-outs and to bar enforcement while the case proceeds.

“If this law stands, local elections will become nationalized and minority-preferred candidates will be pushed out of the picture.” — Plaintiffs’ complaint (E.D.N.Y.)
