Times Union: New York's even-year election law challenged by NY GOP in new lawsuit

October 31, 2025 — Times Union

After New York’s highest court rejected a challenge to the state’s even-year election law, the state Republican Party and several counties filed a new federal lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Albany seeking to overturn it. The complaint invokes the First Amendment and the Voting Rights Act, argues even-year consolidation burdens minority voters and drowns out local issues, and seeks to block enforcement or permit opt-outs; if the law stands, many local offices — including mayors and county executives — will move to even-year ballots in 2026, while constitutionally defined offices remain unchanged.

“We hold that there is no express or implied constitutional limitation on the Legislature’s authority to enact the Even Year Election Law.” — New York’s highest court

“This case is about preserving the opportunity for local candidates to address local issues.” — William A. Brewer III
