South Shore Press: Republicans Challenge New York’s Even Year Election Law in Federal Court

November 13, 2025 – The South Shore Press reported that the New York Republican State Committee filed suit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York (No. 2:25-CV-6083) against the State of New York and Gov. Kathy Hochul, challenging the Even Year Election Law (EYEL), enacted in December 2023.

The complaint alleges EYEL violates the First Amendment and Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act by shifting local elections to even-year ballots dominated by state and federal contests, suppressing local political speech, diminishing local races, and exacerbating racial polarization; plaintiffs include Republican committees and candidates from Nassau, Suffolk, and Orange counties, who seek declaratory and injunctive relief to preserve odd-year elections, and are represented by William A. Brewer III of Brewer Attorneys & Counselors.
